Gold Medals for Lady Flyers
While it may be 60 years overdue, President Barack Obama finally signed a bill to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the WASP, Women’s Airforce Service Pilots. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor that Congress can present to a civilian.
During World War II these women answered to the call of duty and served their country by flying on noncombat military missions in order to relieve male pilots so they could fight in the war. They were not only the first ones to fly American military aircrafts, but they also flew every kind of aircraft there were. Out of the 1,000 who volunteered to serve, 38 of them died. For those who have passed on, the gold medals will be given to their families to ensure their brave service does not go unrecognized.
